July Change for Change: Find the Fresh Food Friends

July's Change for Change supported Find the Fresh Food Friends. When you rounded up your purchase during July, your change went toward encouraging good nutrition by making fresh food fun through an interactive, interesting scavenger hunt activity for kids of all ages during the Kalamazoo Farmers Market.

By rounding your bill to the nearest dollar, you raised $1,145 for Find the Fresh Food Friends.

It's kind of like “Where’s Waldo?”, only with vegetables and fruit. Families and kids use their keen eyes to spot the Fresh Food Friends. They look for a vegetable or fruit with black-eyed-pea-eyes, and other facial features. Kids and families learn about specific vegetables and deepen relationships with their local growers. Prizes are awarded for found “friends”. “Food Friends” have become popular on social media and are a great way for people to connect with farmers market online.

Find the Fresh Food Friends™ makes market days more interesting to kids of all ages. Young people learn the names of new fruits and vegetables, and create associations with the important people growing food they eat. Fresh Food Friends ™ inspire laughter and are great conversation starters.

How it works:  The Fresh Food Friends crew creates a “fresh food friend” at each grower’s table. Young shoppers then hunt for the food friends on the tables. When they find a Fresh Food Friend, they write down the name of the vegetable or fruit,  the name of the grower, and a caption - what that food friend might be thinking, feeling or saying. They turn in their completed game card for a small prize.

Find the Fresh Food Friends is one of several engaging nutrition education programming options organized and offered by Fresh Food is Fun. For more information on Find the Fresh Food Friends ™, please visit the Fresh Food is Fun website. You can view last season's Fresh Food Friends on Instagram.
