July 2011 Board Meeting

The PFC Board had a great July board meeting!  We had a good discussion about ways to create partnerships and relationships with other businesses and organizations in the community.  We realize that this is important work, as we settle into our new location.  If you have connections to an organization that would like to know more about the Peoples Food Co-op, contact a friendly board member via our governance page of our website.

At our June board meeting, we discussed the Board self evaluation report and talked about ways to improve recruitment for board positions.  We discussed the importance for recruitment of future board members in our new neighborhood and are excited about the growing numbers of new owners everyday!  We came up with ideas about how to improve the owner survey and incorporate information about our Global Ends Policy.  We hope to see you at our next meeting on July 26th from 7-9 PM at the Peace Jam located at 625 Harrison Street, Suite 2!.

April 2011 Board Meeting

In April, we welcomed new director Elizabeth Forest to her first board meeting.  Elizabeth has years of experience with the People's Food Co-op and we are excited to have her on the board.  We monitored our Board-General Manager linkage policy, and started a discussion about whether to host Moo-nique dairy's raw milk share pick up in the parking lot at our new store.  We are currently researching different aspects of this, and will continue to discuss this at our next meeting on Tuesday, May 24 from 7-9pm at PeaceJam.  As always, owners are welcome and encouraged to attend board meetings, so please consider joining us!

February 2011 Board Meeting

The Board of Directors had an interesting month in February.  At our board meeting, we had two owners come to participate in the meeting process and this was very helpful.  They provided us with valuable input into our End policies.  It was great to have visitors at the meeting to add new life and new perspective.  We also discussed ideas about how to form partnerships with businesses and organizations in our new neighborhood.  There is much work to be done between now and our store opening and are are VERY excited to be getting so close.

January 2011 Board Meeting

At our January meeting, the Board approved a revised set of 'ends' in our policy document. The ends are one of the most important parts of the policy document and the revisions were designed to more clearly articulate the difference we want PFC to make in the world. We wish to make an impact on the local economy so that 1) cooperative business exists in our community, 2) local jobs exist in our community, and 3) local money stays in our local community. We wish to make an impact on diversity so that 1) bridges exist between Kalamazoo's multiple diverse communities, and 2) people understand justice depends on diversity of social and ecological systems..

December 2010 Board Meeting

At the last meeting, the PFC Board had a full plate!  We had a double dose of business to review, as our November meeting focused on revising and expanding our Ends statement.  We also began planning for the annual meeting to be held in the first quarter of 2011.  As always, we’re working hard to throw a great party! This year, we’ll have the momentum of the construction and opening of the Harrison St. site to celebrate, along with another successful year of healthy food and friends!

October 2010 Board Meeting

The board of directors had an action-packed month.  The expansion that we have been visioning and working toward for years will soon be underway.  At the October board meeting, we carefully reviewed and approved resolutions that allow Chris Dilley to sign (on behalf of all PFC owners) the myriad of official documents that need to be signed before we break ground at the new site.  Excitement is in the air!  In thinking about our new PFC home, the board and management team joined forces and participated in a retreat focused on making the PFC more welcoming and diverse.  Facilitated by Sarah Drumm, the retreat involved team building, conversations about our personal experiences, and action planning that led to concrete ideas and plans to implement.

September 2010 Board Meeting

At the September board meeting, we discussed several upcoming opportunities for board and staff development.  We were happy to have Sarah Drumm attend, helping to finalize plans for a retreat (with the PFC management team) focusing on diversity and inclusion at the PFC.  The board also discussed having a  mini-retreat with a consultant from Syracuse, to further develop our Ends statement: "The People’s Food Cooperative of Kalamazoo exists to create access to food that is healthy for people, land, and the economy."

August 2010 Board Meeting

At the August board meeting, the PFC board continued to discuss the new People's Food Co-op building project.  The building design has been modified to better match the site (visit our expansion page for details). Funding and core designs are in place.  There are also several green building alternatives that we hope to fund with additional member loans.  We are getting closer to ground breaking each month and anticipate this will happen in October!

July 2010 Board Meeting

At the July board meeting, the directors started planning a board/staff retreat that will take place at the end of October.  Prior to the retreat, the board and the management team will visit the RACE Exhibit at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum which opens on October 2, 2010.  Sarah Drumm, of empowerMEnt consulting will facilitate team building and discussions about the RACE Exhibit which will help us to strengthen the skills, knowledge and understanding of race in our community.  The ultimate goal is to create an action plan for PFC to become more welcoming to all members of the community.
